Find Travel eSIM Plans in an AI Chat Using eSIMX MCP

Connect eSIMX MCP to ChatGPT, Claude, or other AI tools to find travel eSIM plans, compare multi-country options, and check prices directly in your AI chat.

Planning a trip to a single country is one thing. But choosing mobile data plans for multiple countries presents another challenge: Should you use a single eSIM to cover your entire trip, or purchase a local plan for each country?

eSIMX MCP allows your AI assistant to search and compare various options in the eSIMX catalog based on your destination, trip duration, and data needs. You can continue planning your trip directly within the chat interface without having to copy plan details between different tabs.

What Can It Do?

MCP stands for “Model Context Protocol.” It provides a standardized way for compatible AI applications to connect to tools and data sources. The eSIMX connection offers two read-only tools:

  • search_plans filters plans in the catalog based on destination, trip duration, and data needs.
  • compare_trip_options compares a complete multi-country itinerary with local plans for each country or region.

This connection does not place orders, book plans, process payments, or access your eSIMX account. You simply view the results; if you wish to purchase through the website, please use the provided product links.

Connecting Your AI Application

The remote MCP endpoint is:

https://api.esimx.com/mcp

No eSIMX API key, eSIMX login credentials, or local MCP server is required. Add this address to applications that support remote MCP connections via Streamable HTTP. Opening this address in a browser does not count as a connection test.

Claude Code

Install this plugin from the public GitHub repository. The following commands will add the Marketplace to your Claude Code configuration and install the plugin. Please use this method instead of adding a second connection to the same server.

claude plugin marketplace add esimx-com/esimx-mcp
claude plugin install esimx@esimx-local

Please review the trust prompts and start a new session if prompted. Use /mcp to check the connection status and confirm that both tools are enabled.

ChatGPT

Please use a ChatGPT account and workspace that allow custom remote MCP servers. The relevant control options and their availability may vary depending on your plan and workspace policies.

  1. Open ChatGPT Plugins. If available, click the plus button, then select Add Custom MCP Server.
  2. Set the name to eSIMX and the description to Read-only eSIM catalog search and itinerary comparison.
  3. In the Connection section, enter https://api.esimx.com/mcp as the remote server URL.
  4. Select the “No authentication required” option. The eSIMX server does not require OAuth credentials or an API key.
  5. Read the risk warning. If the relevant control appears, select I understand and wish to continue, then select Create as a plugin.
  6. Confirm that search_plans and compare_trip_options have been detected, then install or enable the connection.
  7. Start a new conversation and select eSIMX. Where supported, type @ to select a custom plugin, then try the following search and comparison prompts.

If the custom server control does not appear, check your account availability and workspace policies. If your workspace requires OAuth, consult its administrator; never enter fictitious credentials. For details, see the ChatGPT Connection Guide . Establishing a connection in your account will not publish eSIMX to the public ChatGPT directory.

Claude Web and Claude Desktop

If your account and workspace allow custom remote MCP connections, add the endpoint using the application’s connector control. Name the connection “eSIMX,” select the “Unauthenticated” option, and carefully read the trust prompt before enabling it.

Availability and menu labels vary by product and plan. Please refer to the Claude Connector Guide for the corresponding configuration path.

Gemini CLI

This configuration path applies to the Gemini CLI and does not apply to Gemini Web Chat. Please use the latest CLI version that supports remote HTTP MCP and extensions. Please choose one of the following procedures to avoid duplicate connections.

Install the Extension

  1. To register the eSIMX extension in your Gemini CLI installation, run the following command:
 gemini extensions install https://github.com/esimx-com/esimx-mcp
  1. Confirm the extension trust prompt and start a new Gemini CLI session.
  2. Run /mcp and verify that the search_plans and compare_trip_options features are available.
  3. Try the following destination search and trip comparison prompts. Keep the standard tool authorization prompts enabled.

Switching to Project Configuration

If you wish to connect via a workspace without installing the extension, merge the following into the project’s .gemini/settings.json file. Retain existing settings and other servers.

{
   “mcpServers”: {
      “esimx”: {
         “httpUrl”: “https://api.esimx.com/mcp”
      }
   }
}

For this Streamable HTTP connection, use httpUrl instead of url. Restart the session and check /mcp. No authorization headers or API keys are required. For instructions on setting up and removing this, see the Gemini CLI Guide.

Other AI Clients

This codebase also includes support for Codex, Cursor, and VS Code. Please refer to the relevant guide for the client you are using, rather than directly copying the configuration format from other applications.

Try Searching for a Destination

Once connected, tell your AI assistant your destination, length of stay, and required data allowance. For example:

Find an eSIM plan for Japan that is valid for 7 days and has a total data allowance of at least 5 GB. Please display the price in US dollars and the plan link.

Please specify whether the data allowance applies to the entire trip or to daily usage. “A total of 5 GB” and “5 GB per day” are different requirements. If no matching plans are found, ask which requirement should be adjusted, rather than treating a plan with a smaller data allowance as a match.

Comparing Multi-Country Trips

List each country in the order of your trip, noting the duration of stay and data requirements:

Compare a plan covering the entire trip with local plans: a 4-day stay in Japan with 3 GB of total data; followed by a 3-day stay in South Korea with 2 GB of total data.

When comparing, verify that the options are complete: either there is a single plan covering the entire trip, or there are qualifying local plans for each country. If one of the options is incomplete, it should not be displayed as a price for the entire trip.

Verify Results Before Purchasing

  • Results cover the eSIMX product catalog, not the real-time inventory of all carriers or providers on the market.
  • Please verify the returned price in USD, coverage area, data allowance, and validity period.
  • If specific details are unknown, do not assume support for hotspot functionality, activation rules, or speed limits.
  • Before purchasing, open the provided product link and review the plan details.

Provide only the country/region, number of days, and data requirements needed for the search. Do not provide your name, reservation number, passport information, or payment details. Your AI provider and network service may process request and connection metadata. Before sharing sensitive travel information, please read the MCP Data Processing Statement.

Getting Started

Open the eSIMX MCP Code Base, select the appropriate client guide, and connect to the remote endpoint. Version 1.0.0 includes client configurations, plugins, documentation, and SDK examples.

Claude Code 2.1.318 passed testing on November 5, 2026: both search and comparison operations returned successful results. Other client guides describe configuration paths, but their applicability is not guaranteed for every version, account, or network. Please refer to the Validation Log for details on the scope of testing.
